The Best Plan for a Stress-Free Move

Planning Your Next Move

Whether it’s across the country or down the street, moving can be stress. But with careful planning and the right moving boxes and moving supplies, you can accomplish an easier move. Follow this timeline and diffuse moving stress before it starts.

Two Months Before Moving Day

Purge & Declutter. Go through all your stuff and make critical decisions about what stays and what goes. If you haven’t used an item in a year, then it probably shouldn’t go with you to your new home.

Create your three categories for getting rid of stuff: Sell. Donate. Toss. Lightening your load will save you money and work.

Take inventory. Make a list of what you are taking to make the moving estimate easier. An inventory list takes the guesswork out of purchasing moving supplies.

Organize personal papers. Take account of all the sensitive personal documents you need to move like Social Security cards, birth certificates and tax records. Get them organized in a sturdy personal file box. If you’re hiring a mover, you may want to transport these documents yourself to prevent them from getting lost or damaged.

Six Weeks Before Moving Day

Research movers. Take the time to research movers to ensure you get the best bid. Check reviews and get at least three quotes from reputable companies. The more organized you are with inventory also ensures a more accurate quote. Be sure to ask about insurance and damaged property polices.

If you’re moving yourself, six weeks before is the best time to secure your truck rental. This is especially important if you are moving during peak season when trucks rentals will be scarce. Be sure you get the right size truck. Too small a truck means more trips and mileage costs. Use this guide to get closer to an accurate estimate:

  • 26′ will move 4+ bedrooms
  • 24′ will move 3-4 bedrooms
  • 17′ will move 2-3 bedrooms
  • 14′ will move 1-2 bedrooms
  • 10′ will move a studio or small 1-bedroom apartment

Start packing. Best rule for purchasing moving supplies? Get 25 percent more than you think you’ll need. That ensures you that won’t be left short of moving boxes at the last minute.

The second-best rule? Don’t skimp on quality. Supermarket boxes, aside from being dirty, are already weakened from shipping. That means you must spend more time taping up old boxes so the bottom doesn’t drop out.

High quality moving boxes will save you time. There’s no need to reinforce with tape and you can also select tape-free boxes which save on the cost of additional supplies, like tape. Use the box buying guide below to help estimate how many moving boxes you might need.

QUICK TIPS: Use colored dots to mark boxes for different rooms. Create a legend that coordinates with the colored dots. Yellow dot boxes go to the living room, red dot boxes go to kitchen, etc.

One Week Before Moving Day

Contact utilities and forward mail.
Now’s the time to coordinate utility services for the home you’re leaving and the home you’re going to. Also, be sure to have all your mail forwarded at this time.

The Night Before You Move

Pack Your “Take with You Box”
This the box that contains what you might need while unpacking. Razor knives, snacks, water, toiletries. Things like band aids come in handy for accidents and tools for assembling beds and furniture are essential once you arrive at your new destination.

By being organized on your next move you can avoid stress and focus on getting situated in your new home.

Five Ways to Get Moving at Work

It’s all about micro-movements.

standing desk wellness

Micro-movements are incremental movements you can make throughout the day that can benefit your overall health. Think of how many times you could add to your day by taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or parking a little farther from the office. These simple micro-movements contribute to everyday activity, combating the sedentary lifestyle that comes with office work.

The Science of Micro-movements

NEAT, or non-exercise activity thermogenesis, suggests that it takes energy to move even the smallest muscle. Polly de Mille, RN, an exercise physiologist with the Women’s Sports Medicine Center at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City gives an example: “you burn about 1.5 calories per minute just lying still while your body performs its most basic functions.” Go from lying down to sitting in a chair and answering email, and you’ll burn 25 percent more calories.” 1 Adding micro-movements to your nine-to-five routine makes the calorie-burning process a day-long event.

Micro-Movement Activities You Can Perform at Work

  1. Stand More While You Work

Regular transitions from sitting to standing and back again maintains flexibility and improves circulation. On average standing can increase your heart rate by about 10 beats per minute higher than sitting and that makes a difference of about 0.7 of a calorie per minute. That burns up to about 50 calories an hour. If you stand for three hours a day for five days that’s around 750 calories! Sit-stand workstations help make standing a part of your daily routine. Find a sit-stand solution that fits your work space.

  1. Workout at Your Desk

Simple exercises you perform at your desk can burn calories, increase flexibility and improve well-being. Turning your workstation into a workout is an easy, no-sweat approach to exercise.

  • Lean back and lift your feet with legs straight, then bend your knees toward your chest, then straighten again. Do three sets of 20 reps and burn up to 75 calories.
  • Working your stomach muscles at your desk. Simply clench your stomach muscles for about 8 seconds Two sets of this activity for 8 reps will burn 100 calories.
  • See the top five deskercising activities.
  1. Take Walk Breaks

A study by the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition found that frequent, brief walking breaks were more effective at improving well-being than a single, longer walk before work. Just five-minute walks throughout the workday can lift your mood, reduce lethargy and improve overall health.

  1. It’s Okay to Fidget

Fidgeting was once frowned upon, but no more. Tapping a foot, wiggling in your office chair may seem odd, but Iowa State University researchers found that those who frequently fidgeted, were burning an additional 300 calories per day compared to those who remained seated and still.

  1. Take Time to Stretch

Frequent stretching keeps a proper blood and nutrient supply to the working muscles and tissues. Taking a stretch breaks prevents fatigue and discomfort and reduces stress.

Put Your Activity on Schedule

If you need reminders to move, set an alarm on your phone or on your computer. Five minutes every 30 minutes using any of the activities mentioned is an easy way to get moving this spring.

Fellowes AeraMax Professional Air Purifier Wins Excellence in Design Award.

Fellowes Brands wins the Excellence in Design Silver Award for the AeraMax™ Professional Air Purifier featuring new PureView™ technology.

The judges of Appliance Design Magazine’s annual award recognized AeraMax Professional for its user-friendly PureView air monitoring, an innovation that sets the Pro apart in the commercial air treatment sector.  Now occupants can see for themselves—simply, and in plain sight—how seriously facility managers take indoor air quality and the need for a truly clean environment. PureView™ shows the status of the current room air quality including the percentage of particles captured and removed from the air by the unit.

The displays also detect harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odors in the adjacent air, providing a visual readout to determine the presence of the obnoxious—and noxious— pollutants. The PureView™ units offer two viewing modes: PM2.5 and PM10. In PM2.5 mode, the unit measures the PM2.5 particles, like viruses, germs, and smoke, in the air, as well as the amounts outputted by the unit. In PM10 mode, the unit measures the larger PM10 particles coming in and out of the unit.

The AeraMax Professional is available in two models for purifying the air in areas of 300-700 square feet, and 600 to 1200 square feet. A floor stand model is also available.

Are You Less Active Than Your Grandpa? You might be if you work in an office.

standing desks keep you young

We think of our grandparents to be at a stage of life where a sedentary afternoon spent sitting down is understandable and acceptable. Yet with the growth of digital technology at the workplace, sitting still for long hours is no longer reserved for the elderly.

Recent research from Edinburgh shows that many desk jobs lead office workers to spend up to thirty minutes more sitting down each day than members of our  retired population. That means most of us with desk-bound careers are more sedentary than those over 75.

The study revealed that middle-age men especially vulnerable to senior-level immobility, spending close to half an hour longer in their desk chairs every day of the work week. Working women under 45 are not far behind their male cohorts, spending only six minutes less than seniors sitting away the work day.

Don’t Let Your Body Take an Early Retirement

Take short, active breaks. Go for a walk. That pedometer app on your smartphone comes in handy for helping you realize how little you move. Use it to motivate extra steps throughout the day.

Engage with a standing desk workstation all day long. Standing up gets the blood flowing and keeps the body stimulated. When you feel that two PM slump coming on after lunch, stand up and work. The body intuitively associates stillness with sleep. Standing up with a sit-stand desk prevents you from nodding off like grandpa.

Stretch, bend, and move in place. You don’t have to run a marathon around the office to stay active. Use micro-movements like stretching exercises to stay flexible and keep feeling productive.

A Green Shredder Solution That Saves Consumers Money

paper shredders on sale

Fellowes Brands was looking for ways to manage paper shredder inventory with greater sustainability in mind. Here is how their refurbished paper shredder program improved sustainability and offered consumers savings on paper shredders.

A Greener Solution That Saves Green

The United States produces more electronics-based waste (also known as e-waste) annually than any other country. Americans throw away 9.4 million tons of electronics every year. According to the EPA, only 12.5% of that waste is recycled. The remaining 87.5% of that e-waste ends up in landfills across the country.

In an effort to help combat this wastefulness, Fellowes Brands began refurbishing returned shredders, instead of disposing of them, and offering these machines to consumers at a special price. This initiative has greatly reduced the number of shredders that end up in landfills and gives savings opportunities to shredder users. Due to the success of this program, Fellowes now offers a variety of refurbished shredders in their online outlet store, allowing consumers to get a quality shredder at a great price.  Select a Refurbished Paper Shredder.

Quality Intact

Refurbished machines are often new shredders that were returned because the original purchasers changed their minds about the model they bought. Without a refurbished policy, these new shredders would end up in the trash. By establishing a strict testing standard for all returned shredders, Fellowes Brands can ensure the same reliable quality for refurbished shredders that has become to be expected from new machines. Each refurbished shredder is rigorously tested by Fellowes technicians to ensure lasting performance and comes with a one-year warranty.

A Recent Refurbished Shredder Review

“I purchased this as a refurbished unit directly from the Fellowes online site. It was shipped right away for free, and I received it in just three days. I was very pleased with the packing and condition of the shredder… it didn’t look at all like a refurbished unit, but like a brand new one.”   Dzpilot

A Win For Consumers

Small businesses and start-ups on a budget can now get quality shredder protection for less. Consumers with a commitment to sustainability efforts can feel good about purchasing a Fellowes Brands refurbished shredder purchase.
