Create a Bankers Box Pinhole Projector for Safe Solar Eclipse Viewing
April 8, 2024

A Bankers Box pinhole projector is a straightforward and secure method to observe a solar eclipse. Crafted from a Bankers Box and common household items, this projector offers a simple yet effective way to view the event safely.

It’s crucial to never gaze directly at the Sun without proper eye protection, as this can result in severe eye damage or even blindness.

Creating a Projector Using a Bankers Box

This type of pinhole projector operates on the same principle as a basic pinhole projector, but the Bankers Box enhances sturdiness and ease of placement on a surface. It only requires a few additional items to assemble.

You’ll Need:

  • A long Bankers Box
  • Scissors
  • Duct tape
  • Aluminum foil
  • A pin or thumbtack
  • A sharp knife or paper cutter
  • A sheet of white paper

Instructions:

  1. Cut a rectangular hole at one end of the Bankers Box. If needed, tape two boxes together to create a longer box for a larger projected image.
  2. Using scissors, cut a piece of aluminum foil slightly larger than the rectangular hole. Ensure the foil lies completely flat without any wrinkles.
  3. Tape the foil over the rectangular hole in the Bankers Box.
  4. Use a pin to create a tiny hole in the center of the foil.
  5. Tape the sheet of paper inside the opposite end of the box.
  6. Stand with your back toward the Sun. Position the BankersBox over your head with the pinhole facing the Sun. Adjust until you see a small, reversed projection of the eclipsed Sun on the paper inside the box.

Stay Safe!

It’s imperative to never stare directly at the Sun without adequate eye protection. Regular sunglasses are insufficient to shield your eyes from the harmful effects of the Sun’s rays.
